In and around Póvoa-de-Varzim
Póvoa-de-Varzim is another lively Porto getaway geared up for fun and frolics on its enormous sandy beach and the nearby casino. At only 39 kilometres from Porto and linked by the Metro it is within easy reach for a day out or weekend away.
Historic sights are: the old harbour, the ruins of an 18th century fortress Nossa Senhora da Conceio, Sao Pedro de Rates Church a thousand-year-old church and one of the main medieval Romanesque buildings in Portugal, the three thousand year old Cividade de Terroso that was an important city of the Castro culture in North-western Iberian Peninsula and the Manueline pillory of Póvoa-de-Varzim, built in 1514 that represents the emancipation of Povoa-de-Varzim.
Póvoa is a lively, touristy, developed resort aimed at the sun-worshipping, out-for-a-good-time masses. As such it has the usual accoutrements such as the 8 kilometre long beach, a casino and stacks of hotels, restaurants and bars offering good value for money. Surfing and water-sports are also popular and there are several campos desportivos in Póvoa-de-Varzim.
The neo-classical casino dates from the heyday of the 1930s and today offers the usual gambling games and slot machines, entertainment hosting international cabaret stars, restaurants and bars including the "Dancing Buffet" which sounds like huge fun.
Eating out
Finding a restaurant in Póvoa-de-Varzim is easy and the variety is large. Keep in mind that Póvoa has one of the most ancient fishing traditions in Portugal, with nation-wide fame since the 17th century. Not surprisingly, the local staple food are fish and seafood and some local dishes include the Pescada à Poveira (hake with potatoes), Arroz de Marisco (seafood rice), and Lagosta Suada (lobster).
"Restaurante 31 de Janeiro" (near Igreja da Lapa), "Restaurante Belo Horizonte", (near the Casino), and "Restaurante Sáo José" (in the Passeio Alegre Square), all around the seaport and the Bairro Sul fishermen quarter are places where you can taste the local cuisine.

If you are into fastfood, consider tasting the local fastfood known as Francesinha. If you want to try the very own version of the city ask for Francesinha Poveira and the preferred place for the original Francesinha Poveira is 'Café Guardassol' in the beach area.
In Estrada Nacional 13 road you can also find several other interesting restaurants: 'Tourigalo' (Portuguese Piri-piri-Chicken), 'O Marinheiro' (in the shape of a boat) and 'Shelsea' for seafood and Portuguese barbecue, 'The Lingerie Restaurant' (erotic), 'o Transmontano' (regional Portuguese), 'O Manjar dos Leitões' (roasted piglets), 'Restaurante Chinês Li' (Chinese) and several others. If you are into another types of cuisine, such as international, Brazilian or vegetarianism consider looking around Avenida Vasco da Gama.
